Metabolic syndrome is a severe health disorder. It is a name given to a cluster of risk factors that increases risk of certain diseases especially, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and others. It is known by other names as well, some of which are Syndrome X, Dysmetabolic Syndrome, Insulin Resistance Syndrome and Obesity Syndrome.
Know your numbers!
Knowing your numbers becomes very important to identify whether you are at a risk of developing this condition. For a person to be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, any three or more of the following risk factors should be present.
A. Large Waist Circumference: - Having waist circumference higher than the recommended levels, means there is excess fat around the central portion of the body. This is also known as an "apple-shaped" figure; wherein, fat is accumulated in the central portion of your trunk around abdomen. This fat is supposed to be a culprit in acquiring lifestyle disorders and metabolic issues such as artherosclerosis, insulin resistance, diabetes etc. Your doctor/healthcare provider will measure your waist for you.
